Superstar Shah Rukh Khan returned to the big screen in January 2023 with Pathaan. Starring alongside Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, the film crossed Rs. 1000 crore mark at the global box office making it a monstrous success. Helmed by Siddharth Anand, the film broke several box office records. Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh believes that not simply Shah Rukh Khan, but the film was a complete package that brought the audiences back to the theatre.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Taran Adarsh said that the film had everything in it for it to become this successful. “Pathaan was a saviour – Shah Rukh Khan, Yash Raj Films. Audiences were back; Yash Raj was back; Shah Rukh Khan was back – all three needed [the success] desperately. Sorry, the audiences, of course, were always there but yes, Yash Raj Films and Shah Rukh Khan and the film industry were back. Now the thing is, a lot of people tell me that it was because of Shah Rukh Khan because SRK was seen on the big screen after three and a half, four years after Zero, and I disagree. I genuinely feel that the film also had its merits. Of course, Shah Rukh Khan, no denying that. His presence was tremendous. His performance was top-notch, but I think it was a complete package. It was entertaining and that’s what the audience wanted. And that’s why it worked at the box office,” he said.

He added, “It was a savior for the film industry that was reeling. The industry was bleeding. The exhibition sector was bleeding. A lot of people, a lot of exhibitors were planning to shut shop. In fact, if you recall, at that point of time of Pathaan, a few single screens were re-opened; around 26-27, I don’t remember the number but it brought about a big change.”

Talking about Shah Rukh Khan’s position after Pathaan, he said, “Well, number one to number five, definitely. He’s the king and there’s no denying that. There’s a saying that he is with the bang. The fact is that you’re as good or bad as you were last Friday. People know you because of your last Friday only in this industry. In that respect, if you see the numbers of Pathaan overtaking a film like Baahubali 2 is a huge achievement. Dangal, yes; KGF – 2, yes; Baahubali 2; Pathaan is number one. I’m talking strictly of the Hindi version. I think that’s what matters because eventually you’re known by your box office number, right? By your return in the box office. The way you performed or the critics praised you or gave you acclaim; nothing matters at the end of the day. It is the box office that matters. I think here the numbers spoke louder than ever.”

SRK will be next seen in Jawan, helmed by Atlee. The project also stars Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi. It is scheduled for June 2 release. He also has Dunki with Rajkumar Hirani, set for December 2023 release.
