Each cinema industry has its own set of stars and superstars, performers who have risen to achieve the pinnacle of showmanship. Well, the Hindi film industry is not much different. Recently in an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh opened up about the history of superstars in the Hindi film industry.

EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh opens up about the history of superstars; says, “Waqt badalta rehta hai hamesha”

Beginning with the current phase the industry is going through Taran started, “It is an interesting phase we are in right now with big stars be it Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and even Prabhas from the South of course. I guess it is going to be a very good year post-June onwards. I feel that a lot of young actors are also coming in. Ranbir Kapoor is coming with Animal, Ranveer Singh is coming with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, then there is Sunny Deol who is returning after a gap with Gadar 2. What an interesting phase…”

Further going on to talk about the history of the superstar, Taran continues, “Sometimes I read statements that says, ‘Salman, SRK, Aamir, Akshay, Ajay, and Hrithik these are the last superstars in the industry, after them there is no one.’ But I beg to differ, ‘waqt badalta rehta hai hamesha’. The first superstar from Hindi cinema was Mr. Ashok Kumar. He did many successful films with Devika Rani, and then came Kismet; it was the first blockbuster of India in 1943. After that, it looked like there could never be any star as big as Ashok Kumar. Instead, three big names came after that – Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Dev Anand. These three ruled the industry and did so for a long time. Again there was a question who next, but there came Rajesh Khanna, who did have a good run, but it was not long. This was because of the new ‘Angry Young Man’ who is still in the industry, Amitabh Bachchan. But after him there came Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, today again SRK is back, Salman might make a comeback with Tiger 3. So kal koi aur tha, aaj koi aur hai, aur kal koi aur ho sakta hai.”

Finally concluding, Taran talks about what is to come saying, “Coming back to the new generation, it is very important that we have more stars and more talent coming in, because any industry cannot rely on four or five stars.”
