Nawazuddin Siddiqui is known currently as one of the finest performers. But the actor had to see a long period of struggle, during which he played small roles in a number of films like Shool, Sarfarosh, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, etc. He finally got noticed in Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur and since then there has been no looking back.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui recalls being disrespected on sets during meals, “I would try eating meals with the main leads, but I’d be dragged out by the collar”
In a recent interview with BBC Hindi, when Nawazuddin was asked if he faced any disrespect on film sets when he was a struggling actor, he answered, “Of course, thousands of times. Sometimes on set, I would ask the spot boy for water, and he’d completely ignore me. Then you’d have to get it yourself. A lot of productions here segregate the cast and crew during mealtimes. Junior artists eat separately, the supporting artists have their own space, and the main leads are also separated.”
Nawazuddin also revealed that he faced physical abuse when he tried eating with well-known stars. “On some productions, and I have to credit Yash Raj Films for also doing this, everybody eats together,” he said. “But a lot of production houses make divisions. I would often try to eat where the main leads were eating, but I’d be dragged out by the collar. I was ego-driven, and I would get angry; I thought actors should be given more respect. And sometimes they’d let me through.”
On the work front, Nawazuddin was recently seen in the movie Jogira Sara Ra Ra, where he was paired opposite Neha Sharma. He has a line-up of projects that includes, Noorani Chehra, Haddi, Tiku Weds Sheru, and Adbhut.”
